Chapter 2: The Note Under the Food

I stepped back and let him in.
My husband came downstairs, took one look at the man's face, and went very still.
"Sir, please," I said.
"Tell us what's happening."
He sat on the edge of our couch, turning the pink lunchbox over in his hands like he didn't know how to begin.
"My name is Walter," he finally said.
"I've been sitting near that school for almost two years."
He looked up at me, eyes red.
"Alice didn't just bring me food.
She sat with me.

My throat tightened.
My husband reached for my hand.
"But three days ago," Walter said, his voice dropping, "she didn't come."
He opened the lunchbox slowly.
Inside was the lunch I had packed — completely untouched.
And underneath the food, folded into a small square, was a piece of paper.
A note.
In Alice's handwriting.
Walter couldn't bring himself to read it aloud.
He simply held it out to me.
My hands were shaking as I unfolded it.
The first line stopped my heart.
*"Walter, I'm sorry I can't come anymore.
They said if I keep talking to you, they'll make sure you get in trouble."*
I looked up at my husband.
He had gone pale.
"Who told her that?" I whispered.
Walter's jaw tightened.
"That's why I came."
