The screen was already open.
It was a text thread.
Adam's name at the top.
The messages were between him and a woman I didn't recognize.
My eyes caught the most recent one first.
*"She's going to ruin everything.
The baby was a mistake.
You know that."*
Adam's reply was sent the morning of the reunion.
*"I know.
I'm handling it."*
My daughter was still pressed against my chest.
I read the message again.
Then again.
Adam reached us.
He looked at his mother, then at the phone in my hand.
"That's not what it looks like."
His mother didn't move.
"Then tell her what it looks like."
He reached for the phone.
I stepped back.
"Who is she?" I asked.
He said nothing.
"Adam." His mother's voice was flat.
"Who is she?"
He rubbed the back of his neck and looked toward the driveway instead of at me.
That was when his aunt stood up from the far table.
"I know who she is," she said quietly.
The whole yard went still.
Adam turned toward her fast.
Too fast.
His aunt looked directly at me.
"She's been at this farm before.
More than once.
While you were pregnant."
