Chapter 2: The Key in the Box

Inside was a single car key attached to a small paper tag.
Stacy picked it up with trembling fingers.
Written on the tag were the words: “2012 Toyota Corolla.”
She stared at me.
“This is a joke, right?”
“No,” I said.
“It’s safe, reliable, and already paid for.”
“But you were getting me a Tesla!”
“I never said that.”
Her eyes filled with angry tears.
“You knew what I wanted!”
My husband stepped forward.
“Wanting something doesn’t mean you’re entitled to it.”
Stacy pushed the box away.
“I can’t drive that to school.
Everyone will laugh at me.”
The kitchen went silent.
I looked directly at her.
“You mean the same way you laughed at your friend whose parents expected her to save for half a car?”
Stacy froze.
“You heard me?” she whispered.
“Every word.”
Before she could answer, her phone lit up on the table.
A message appeared in her group chat:
“We’re outside!
Come show us the Tesla!”
Then the doorbell rang.
Stacy’s face went pale again as three familiar voices called her name from the front porch.
