Chapter 2: The Recording She Was Never Supposed to Hear

The officer opened the folder on the hood of his car.

I looked down at the deed to my house.

My name had been crossed out.

Teresa's name was typed in its place.

The signature at the bottom was dated three weeks ago.

"Where did you get this?" I asked Mason.

He wouldn't look at me.

Teresa stepped forward.

Her voice was calm now.

Too calm.

"You were never responsible enough to hold onto it.

I was protecting the family."

"You forged my signature."

She smiled.

"Prove it."

One of the officers pulled Mason aside.

That's when he broke.

He said Teresa had been planning this for over a year.

The party wasn't for Frederick.

It was the day she intended to move her things into the master bedroom.

Amy was standing beside the car, holding Frederick against her chest.

She hadn't said a word.

But when I turned to look at her, she reached into her coat pocket and held out her phone.

There was a recording on the screen.

Dated six months ago.

Teresa's voice.

Clear as anything.

"Once the deed is transferred, the wife has no claim.

We just need Connor out of the house long enough to—"

Amy pressed play.

The officer went still.

Teresa's face changed for the first time all evening.
