Chapter 2: What He Had Already Set in Motion

I sat on the edge of that hotel bed for a long time, the deed folder open in my lap.

Julian hadn't just asked me to leave our home on the day we buried our son.

He had been trying to get his hands on that deed for months.

The morning after Leo was admitted to the ICU, Julian had gone through my filing cabinet.

I had caught him and he said he was looking for the insurance paperwork.

I believed him.

I was too exhausted and too frightened to question anything.

I believed him.

I picked up my phone and called my attorney, Margaret Holt.

It was almost eleven at night.

She answered on the second ring.

"Clara?

What's wrong?"

I told her everything.

The funeral.

What Julian said in the kitchen.

Chloe.

The deed.

There was a long silence on her end.

Then she said, very carefully: "Clara, I need you to stay exactly where you are.

Do not go back to that house tonight."

"Why?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"Because Julian called my office three weeks ago.

He was asking about spousal property rights in Texas.

Specifically about whether a husband could claim a pre-marital asset if the wife was deemed...

emotionally unfit to manage it."

The room went cold.

"He was planning this," I said.

Margaret didn't answer right away.

And in that silence, I understood that this had never been about Chloe at all.
