Chapter 2: Something Has Stopped Working

She went very still.
Not the kind of still that means someone is thinking.
The kind that means something has stopped working inside them.
She looked at the card.
Then at me.
Then at the flight attendant, who had taken a small step back.
"That's not possible," she said.
"And yet," I said.
The flight attendant's careful smile was completely gone now.
She straightened.
Her whole posture changed in about two seconds.
"Mr.
Calloway," she said.
"I am so sorry.
Can I get you anything?"
The woman's mouth opened.
Closed.
She looked around at the surrounding rows — the people who had heard her, who were now watching in total silence.
"This is some kind of mistake," she said, but her voice had lost its certainty.
It was smaller now.
Searching.
"The only mistake," I said quietly, "was made about four minutes ago."
I picked my bag up off the floor.
Set it back on the seat.
Sat down.
She was still standing in the aisle.
Then a man in a dark suit appeared from the rear of the cabin.
One of my security team.
He'd been there the whole time.
Watching.
He looked at her.
Then at me.
"Sir," he said.
"Do you want her removed from the flight?"
The whole cabin was listening now.
And the woman finally understood — this wasn't going to be explained away.
