Chapter 2: The Letters That Never Arrived

I stared at him.
“What I deserve?
Where is Owen?”
The man lowered his eyes.
“Please open the box, Miss Nora.”
My husband stepped beside me as I lifted Daniel’s jacket.
Beneath it were dozens of unopened letters, a small brass key, and the torn bus schedule with my name still written across it.
My hands began to shake.
“Owen kept this?”
“For twenty-six years.”
“Then why didn’t he bring it himself?”
The stranger looked away.
Before he could answer, my daughter picked up one of the envelopes.
“Mom, these were sent to your old workplace.”
Every letter had been stamped RETURN TO SENDER.
But the oldest envelope had been opened and sealed again.
Across the front, someone had written three words in black ink:
DO NOT FORWARD.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
“My old boss,” I whispered.
“He knew Owen was searching for me.”
The man nodded.
“Owen learned the truth only last month.
That’s when he sent me.”
“Who are you?”
He looked directly at me, and suddenly I understood why his face seemed familiar.
“My name is Samuel,” he said.
“Owen is my father.”
Then he pointed to the key in my hand.
“That opens what he truly left you—but first, you need to know what your boss took from both of you.”
