Chapter 2: Something He Wasn't Telling Me

Part 2 ⬇️
She was wearing black.
Head to toe.
Like she'd come dressed for a funeral.
A black dress.
Black gloves.
A small black hat pinned to her hair.
Not October-cold black.
Mourning black.
She stood in the middle of our family photo — my three daughters in their pink blankets, balloons everywhere, my mom still crying happy tears — and she looked like she was burying someone.
Nobody moved.
My husband said her name.
Just once.
Quietly.
She didn't look at him.
She looked straight at me.
"Three girls," she said.
"That's the end of the family name.
I want that on record."
My mother made a sound I'd never heard from her before.
My sister stepped forward.
"You need to leave."
His mother didn't move.
She looked down at the baby in my husband's arms — his daughter, her granddaughter — and she said nothing.
Just looked.
Then she buttoned the cape back up.
That's when my father-in-law, who hadn't said a word the entire morning, walked over and took her by the arm.
He said something to her quietly.
I couldn't hear it.
But her face changed.
Whatever he said — she went pale.
She let him walk her back to the car.
She didn't look back once.
My husband stood there holding our daughter, and I watched something close in his face that I'd never seen close before.
He knew something.
I was sure of it.
And he wasn't telling me.
---
What did his father say to her?
May you like
And what has my husband been hiding?
