Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Expected

Part 2 ⬇️
Reid stepped back into the room without June.
He had left her with a nurse in the hallway.
I could hear her crying softly through the door.
I looked at my husband — this man I had shared a bed with for six years — and I felt like I was seeing a stranger.
"Start talking."
He sat down.
Not in his chair.
In the one by the window.
Like he already knew he had lost the right to sit beside me.
"Miles called me eight weeks ago," he said.
"He was in trouble.
I told him to handle it.
I thought he did."
"What kind of trouble?"
Reid's jaw tightened.
"The kind he never told anyone about."
"Reid."
"He had a daughter, Maren.
He never told our family.
Never told us her mother existed.
Then three weeks ago, her mother was in an accident.
She didn't make it."
The room went very quiet.
"And Miles?"
Reid didn't answer right away.
That pause lasted too long.
"Where is Miles?"
He looked at the floor.
"That's what I've been trying to find out since eight o'clock last night."
My breath stopped.
Outside the door, June had gone quiet.
Then my mother walked back in with her coffee — and stopped cold when she saw Reid's face.
"What happened?" she whispered.
Reid looked up.
"Miles is missing."
