Chapter 2: The Name on the Donation Form

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I gripped the doorframe just to stay upright.

Because the woman standing on my porch — wearing my daughter's dress — had Teresa's eyes.

Not similar.

Not close.

Identical.

"Who are you?" I whispered.

She swallowed hard.

"My name is Diane.

I bought this dress at a thrift store about three years ago.

But last month I found something sewn into the lining." She reached into a small bag and held out a folded piece of paper.

"I think it was meant for you."

My name was written on the outside in Teresa's handwriting.

I couldn't breathe.

"There's something else," Diane said quietly.

She hesitated, like she was afraid of what came next.

"The woman who donated this dress to the thrift store...

she left a name."

I stared at her.

"The name on the donation form," Diane said, "was Teresa."

The ground felt like it dropped out from under me.

Teresa had been alive.

She had donated the dress herself.

And she had hidden a letter inside it — addressed to me — knowing that someday, somehow, I might find it.

I reached for the letter with trembling hands.

But before I could open it, Diane touched my arm.

"There's one more thing you need to know," she said.

"And I don't think you're going to want to hear it alone."

What was in that letter — and what did Diane know that she was afraid to say out loud?

The full truth is in the link below.
