Chapter 1: The Woman Outside the Church

I found my mother outside a church in her bathrobe holding a bridal bouquet — I was already fearing the worst about her health when she grabbed my arm and said, "Your father can never know I was here."
My parents have been married for forty-three years.
I'm their only son, and they raised me in a loving home.
They always treated each other with warmth and respect, and I'd never had any reason to think something was wrong between them.
That morning, I was driving to work just after seven when I passed a small church a few miles from their house.
At first, I barely noticed the woman standing outside.
Then I recognized her.
My mother.
She was wearing her blue bathrobe, slippers, and no coat.
And in both hands, she was clutching a bridal bouquet.
I pulled over immediately.
"Mom?"
She turned toward me.
Her hair was uncombed and her face was pale, but her eyes were clear.
She knew exactly where she was.
That somehow made the whole thing even stranger.
I stepped over quickly.
"What are you doing here?
Are you okay?
Where's Dad?"
"I'm fine," she said firmly.
"You're standing outside a church in your bathrobe holding wedding flowers."
"I know what I'm wearing."
I stared at her.
"Then tell me what's going on."
I reached for the bouquet, but she pulled it closer to her chest.
"No."
"Mom, you're scaring me."
She glanced toward the church doors, checked the time on her phone, then looked back at me.
Every movement was calm.
Deliberate.
This wasn't confusion.
She had come here for a reason.
Then she suddenly grabbed my arm.
"Listen to me," she said softly.
"Your father can never know I was here."
I stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she finally told me what was going on.
