Chapter 2: He Told Me You Were Dying

**— PART 2 —**

Those six words stopped my breath.

"He told me you were dying."

I stared at her.

Rain dripped from her hair onto my porch.

She wasn't angry.

She was shaking.

"He said you had maybe a year," Tessa whispered.

"He said the marriage was already over.

That you'd agreed to separate quietly."

My hand tightened on the door frame.

"And you believed him," I said.

She flinched like I'd sl*pped her.

"I ended it this morning," she said.

"When I got your envelope.

When I saw all seventeen receipts laid out with one sentence written across the top." Her voice broke.

"I didn't know he was lying to both of us."

I had written four words across that top receipt.

Just four.

*Ask him about Diane.*

Tessa's face changed when I said the name out loud.

"You know who Diane is?" I asked.

She went pale.

"That's not — Grant said Diane was a work colleague.

Old friend.

Nothing more."

I stepped back and opened the door wider.

"Come inside," I said quietly.

"Because Tessa, I don't think either of us knows the full story yet."

She walked in.

And that's when my phone lit up on the kitchen counter.

Grant's name on the screen.

Calling for the fourth time in twenty minutes.

Neither of us moved to answer it.
