Chapter 2: What the Guest Bedroom Was Hiding

The paramedics arrived in eight minutes.
My mother stood in the corner and didn't say a word.
Marcus hadn't moved from the doorway.
Neither of them tried to stop me a second time.
While the medics worked on Elena, I watched my mother's eyes.
Not her mouth.
Her eyes.
She wasn't grieving.
She was calculating.
"She had a condition," Mother said suddenly, speaking to the paramedics.
"A heart condition.
The doctors warned us it could happen at any time."
I turned to face her.
"Which doctor?
Give me a name."
She straightened her blouse.
"I don't remember exactly."
"You don't remember the name of the doctor who told you your daughter-in-law was going to d*e?"
Silence.
One of the paramedics looked up from Elena and met my eyes for just a moment.
He'd heard everything.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
Four words.
*Check the guest bedroom.*
I looked at Marcus.
He was staring at his phone.
His face had gone completely white.
Whatever was in that room — he already knew about it.
And he was terrified I was about to find it.
---
What Daniel found in that guest bedroom exposed a plan that had been months in the making.
