Chapter 2: The Voice on the Other End

Part 2 ⬇️

Ethan didn't even look at the contract.

He looked at me.

"Where did you get that?" he said.

His voice was low.

Almost careful.

"It was in my father's files," I told him.

"The ones you said were lost."

Barbara stepped forward.

"You don't understand what you're holding."

"Then explain it to me."

She went quiet.

That told me everything.

I read the clause out loud.

The one that transferred management of my father's property portfolio to Ethan's family trust — signed two weeks before my father's stroke.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"That was a legal arrangement.

Your father agreed."

"My father couldn't hold a pen two weeks before his stroke, Ethan."

The room went still.

Then my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

The voice on the other end was older.

Quiet.

He said one sentence.

"Don't let them take the second document.

They don't know you already have it."

I looked up at Ethan.

His face had gone completely white.

What is the second document — and how does this man know what's inside that suitcase?
