Chapter 2: The Lie That Lasted Forty Years

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

The house looked abandoned.

Paint peeling.

Shutters hanging crooked.

But the front door was unlocked.

The officer stepped aside.

"Go in," he said quietly.

"Someone is waiting for you."

My legs barely moved.

Inside, a woman sat at a small table.

Old.

Thin.

Wrapped in a dark shawl.

It took me a full ten seconds to recognize her.

My sister, Nadia.

"You came," she whispered.

"Nadia — why are the police here?

What is happening?"

She looked down at her hands.

"Mama left you something.

But Hassan found out."

That name.

After forty years, that name still made my chest tighten.

"Hassan is d*ad," I said.

"You told me he d*ed years ago."

Nadia finally looked up.

"I lied."

The room went completely silent.

"He's been looking for you, Samira.

All this time.

The police aren't here to arrest you."

She reached under the table and placed an old envelope between us.

"They're here because of what's inside this."

My hand was shaking as I reached for it.

Then a door behind me opened.

And a voice I hadn't heard in forty years said my name.
