Chapter 2: What He Hid in the Basement

I heard them from down the hallway.
Daniel was still screaming.
Jessica was pressed against the wall outside his room, her face white, hands shaking.
A nurse rushed past me.
Then another.
I walked slowly.
Every step hurt, but I kept going.
When I reached the doorway, Daniel was holding the contents of the box with trembling hands, staring at me like he'd seen a ghost.
"Where did you get this?" he whispered.
"From the basement," I said.
"Where you hid it."
It was a folder.
Thick, worn at the edges.
Inside were documents — financial records, transfer receipts, a second phone contract.
All in his name.
All going back three years.
Not six months.
Three years.
Jessica looked at the folder, then at Daniel.
Her voice dropped.
"You told me she didn't know anything."
"She didn't," he said.
"Then what IS this?"
He had no answer.
I looked at Jessica and said quietly, "He's been lying to both of us."
She took one step back.
Then another.
That's when my phone buzzed.
I looked down at the screen.
It was a message from a number I didn't recognize.
Four words:
*"We need to talk."*

What Daniel had been hiding for three years was far worse than the affair.
