Chapter 2: What Kind of Man He Doesn't Want to Become

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️

Ethan still wouldn't look at me.

I walked over and touched his arm.

He flinched.

Actually flinched — like I'd startled him out of something.

"Ethan.

Look at me."

He did.

And I wished he hadn't.

His eyes were red.

Not crying — something worse.

Like he'd just been handed information he didn't know what to do with.

"Dad told me some things," he said quietly.

"What things?"

He shook his head and looked back down at the phone.

My husband finally put his phone in his pocket and stood up.

"We should talk inside," he said to me.

Not to Ethan.

To me.

"No." I didn't move.

"You tell me right now.

What did you say to him?"

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said something I have turned over in my mind every single day since.

"I told him what kind of man he doesn't want to become."

The deck went completely quiet.

My sister-in-law lowered her phone.

Ethan made a sound — not a word, just a sound — and walked inside without looking at either of us.

And I stood there dripping on the deck, realizing that whatever had just happened between my husband and my son had nothing to do with a photograph.

It had been building for a long time.

And I was the last one to know.
