I sat beside Emily's hospital bed and asked her directly.
"What did Brandon mean?
Why would you lose everything if I report this?"
Emily turned her face toward the window.
Her hands gripped the blanket so tightly her knuckles went pale.
"He said if I ever told anyone...
he would show them the papers."
"What papers, Emily?"
She closed her eyes.
"When we got married, he made me sign something.
I was twenty-three.
I didn't understand all of it.
He said it was normal."

Lawson arrived within the hour.
I handed him my phone — Brandon had sent a message while I was driving.
Lawson read it once.
Then he read it again.
"Margaret." His voice dropped.
"This isn't just about the marriage."
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a document.
Emily's signature was at the bottom.
And above it — a transfer of property.
Our family ranch.
The land my husband had built with his own hands.
Brandon had used Emily to sign it over.
Six years ago.
Before I could speak, Emily's nurse stepped in quietly.
"Mrs.
Collins?
There's a man outside.
He says he's been waiting two hours.
He says he used to work at the ranch."
I looked at Lawson.
He was already reaching for his notepad.
