Chapter 1: The Scream at the Top of the Stairs

"I caught my rich fiancée throwing scalding soup at my bedridden mother, but I never expected the dark secret I uncovered would destroy our engagement forever.
When I stepped into my home and saw my rich fiancée throwing scalding hot soup at my bedridden, recovering mother while our loyal housekeeper blocked the splash with her own body, I immediately uncovered a dark secret that ruined our engagement forever.
The agonizing scream echoed down the grand staircase of my Austin home, followed immediately by the sharp, sickening shatter of porcelain.
I didn't think.
I just ran.
I'm Adrienne Cross, a billionaire tech CEO who went from sleeping in a rusty Sedan to running a self-made empire, but in that terrifying second, every dollar I owned was entirely worthless.
My heart hammered against my ribs as I took the stairs three at a time, racing toward the master suite where my seventy-one-year-old mother, Eleanor, was recovering from fragile open-heart surgery.
When I burst through the heavy double doors, the scene inside brought me to a sudden halt.
The air reeked of scalded cream and tomato soup.
My fiancée of eighteen months, Vanessa Sterling, stood towering over my mother's bed, her tailored designer outfit spotless, her face flushed with a terrifying mixture of rage and panic.
On the bed, my mother was hyperventilating, clutching her chest where red, steaming liquid soaked through her thin hospital gown.
But on the hardwood floor lay Grace Bennett, our devoted housekeeper of nine years.
Grace was on her knees, cradling her bare arm — skin already blistering red where she had thrown her own body over my mother to block the scalding liquid.
"Adrienne!" Vanessa gasped the second she saw me, her tone instantly shifting from vicious to hysterically defensive.
Squeezing out instant, practiced tears, she pointed a manicured finger at Grace.
"Thank God you're here!
She dropped the tray!
I tried to catch it, but she pushed me — she almost burned your mother on purpose!"
Grace looked up through a blur of tears, her body trembling violently, unable to speak as she pressed a napkin against her agonizing burns.
My mother pointed a shaking hand at Vanessa, her voice barely a raspy whisper.
"Adrienne...
no...
she..."
My bl00d ran cold.
The math wasn't adding up.
Grace had raised her twelve-year-old son Marcus while caring for my mother like her own family for nearly a decade.
She wouldn't drop a cup, let alone push anyone.
I stepped between Vanessa and the bed, my pulse roaring in my ears, and looked my fiancée dead in the eye.
"What happened here, Vanessa?
Tell me the truth."
Vanessa's eyes flashed with a dark, desperate venom as she sneered, throwing all pretense away.
"You want the truth?
Ask your precious mother why she's secretly signing away your family fortune to the help!"

What did Eleanor sign — and why was Vanessa so desperate to stop it?
