Mason's voice came through the speakers loud and clear.
"My dad said his back was too hurt to carry my baby sister.
But he just carried that lady's suitcase like it was nothing."
The deck went quiet.
A few people turned to look at Ryan.
Ryan's face went from pale to red in about three seconds.
"Mason, buddy, come here—"
"Why does your back only hurt when Mom asks for help?"
Someone near the railing actually laughed.
Then caught themselves.
Ryan grabbed for the microphone.
Mason stepped back.
"Give me that.
Now."
"Ryan." His own mother's voice cut through the crowd.
She was standing ten feet away with his father.
She had heard everything.
"Let the boy speak."
Ryan froze.
The woman in the white dress had not moved.
She was still standing near the elevator, suitcase beside her, watching.
Ryan's mother looked at her.
Then at Ryan.
Something shifted in her expression — not surprise exactly.
Something slower.
Something that looked like recognition.
"Do you two know each other?" she asked quietly.
Ryan didn't answer.
The woman in white looked down at the floor.
That silence said more than any answer could.
