Chapter 2: The Boy in the Photograph

My hands wouldn't turn the photograph over.
I just stood there, in my wedding dress, in front of everyone I loved, holding a picture I was terrified to see.
"What do you mean Leo d*ed?" I whispered.
"You ARE Leo.
You knew everything.
The dog.
The oak tree.
The song—"
"His name was Daniel," he said quietly.
"I'm his younger brother.
He made me promise, before he was g0ne, to find you.
To tell you he never forgot."
Someone in the front pew gasped.
My mother stood up.
"He talked about you until the end, Monica." His voice cracked.
"Every single year on your birthday.
He kept a box.
Letters he never sent.
Photos.
The promise he made you when you were five."
I finally turned the photograph over.
It was Leo.
The real Leo.
Standing beside a boy I didn't recognize — younger, smaller, same green eyes.
Written on the back in faded ink:
*"Tell her I kept my promise the only way I still could."*
My legs nearly gave out.
The priest hadn't moved.
The guests hadn't moved.
My mother was crying.
And then a woman I had never seen before stood up from the very last pew — and walked slowly toward the altar.
"There's something else," she said.
"Something he doesn't know either."
