Chapter 2: Four Words That Froze the Room

The man in the doorway was Detective Harlan Moore.

I recognized his voice.

He'd coached Ethan's soccer team two years ago.

I never imagined I'd be lying in a hospital bed, silently thanking God he was standing in that room.

Ryan laughed — the kind of laugh that sounds confident but isn't.

"Tampered?

That's a serious accusation, Detective."

"It is," Harlan said.

"Which is why I'd like you to explain how brake fluid ends up completely drained from a vehicle that passed its inspection four days earlier."

Claire moved toward the door.

"I don't think this is the right place for—"

"Sit down, Claire."

She stopped.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"You have no right to—"

"I have every right.

We pulled the vehicle this morning.

The mechanic's report is already filed."

Ethan pressed close to my side.

I could feel him trembling.

Then Ryan's phone buzzed on the table.

He glanced down.

His face changed.

Whatever name was on that screen — it made him go pale.

He silenced it quickly, but Harlan had already seen.

"Expecting someone, Ryan?"

Ryan said nothing.

But Claire whispered something under her breath — just four words — and my bl00d ran cold.

"She already knows everything."

---

Who is "she" — and what does she know?
