At 9:47 p.m., Lily opened her eyes.
The first word she said was not "Mom." It was a question.
"Is Daddy here?"
I kept my voice steady.
"I'm here, sweetheart.
I'm right here."
She looked at the empty chair.
She didn't ask again.
Twenty minutes later, the door opened.
It wasn't Grant.
It was his mother, Patricia — elegant coat, pearls, the same expression she had worn at our wedding when she told me quietly that her son "deserved someone less focused on her career."
She looked at Lily, then at me.
"Evelyn.
I heard what happened." She paused.
"I hope you won't do anything rash."
"Rash," I repeated.
"Grant made a mistake.
He panicked.
You know how he gets."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Patricia.
Your granddaughter called the housekeeper because she couldn't breathe.
She was alone for four hours."
Patricia's jaw tightened.
"I understand that.
But there are things you don't know yet.
Things about why Grant has been so…
distracted lately."
She reached into her handbag and placed an envelope on the bedside table.
"Read this before you make any decisions."
Then she left.
I stared at the envelope.
Lily had fallen back asleep, her small hand still wrapped around mine.
I didn't open it.
Not yet.
