Chapter 2: What Maddie Saw From the Stairs

Part 2 ⬇️
Maddie sat on the edge of my bed, hands folded in her lap.
"I saw him, Mom.
He wasn't looking at wires.
He was putting something in."
My stomach dropped.
"Putting what in?"
"A box.
Like a metal box.
He had it in a bag when he came home at lunch.
He didn't know I was watching from the stairs."
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you say something at dinner?"
She looked down.
"He told me not to.
He said it was a surprise for you and that I'd ruin it if I said anything."
A surprise.
In the wall.
I walked downstairs.
Brian was sweeping drywall dust into a pile, his back to me.
"Brian."
He turned around.
"What kind of box did you put in that wall?"
The broom stopped moving.
He didn't answer right away.
That pause told me everything.
"It's nothing you need to worry about."
"Our daughter watched you hide something in our home and told her to keep it secret.
That's not nothing."
He set the broom down slowly.
"I was going to tell you."
"Tell me now."
He looked at the wall, then back at me.
"I can't.
Not yet."
