Chapter 2: The Note She Was Never Supposed to See

Part 2 ⬇️
She looked straight at me and said, "You should ask your husband how many times he called me this week.
He knew exactly what I was doing."
The door closed behind her.
I stood there unable to move.
Emma tugged my sleeve.
"Mommy?
Are you okay?"
I told her yes.
I told her to go watch TV.
I waited until I heard her footsteps on the stairs.
Then I called my husband.
He picked up on the second ring.
"Hey, how did it go with—"
"Did you know what she was doing to Emma's teeth?"
Silence.
Not a confused silence.
Not a surprised silence.
A guilty one.
"It wasn't a big deal.
She mentioned it and I said—"
"You KNEW."
"She said they were loose.
She said Emma asked her to—"
"Emma is SEVEN.
She doesn't consent to having teeth pulled."
He went quiet again.
Then he said something I never expected.
"My mother only does things out of love.
You've never been able to see that."
I looked down at my hands.
They were shaking.
That's when I noticed Emma standing in the doorway again, still holding her little gap-toothed smile, clutching something small in her fist.
"Mommy," she said quietly.
"Grandma gave me this.
She said not to show you."
She opened her hand.
It was a folded piece of paper.
