Chapter 2: The Papers Already Signed

PART 2
The bronze doors closed with a quiet, final click.
Inside, my mother sank into the nearest chair and let out a long breath.
Donovan had stopped crying.
He pressed his small face against my neck and fell asleep within minutes.
I stood at the window and watched.
Caden was still in the street.
He hadn't moved.
Bonnie stood behind him, her arms crossed, her face doing something I had never seen before — calculating.
Then Caden's phone lit up.
He answered it fast.
Too fast.
He turned his back to the mansion and lowered his voice, but I could still read his body language.
Shoulders tight.
One hand pressed to his forehead.
Nodding like someone receiving instructions.
When he hung up, he didn't look lost anymore.
He looked like a man with a plan.
My mother touched my arm.
"Taylor," she said quietly.
"There's something I didn't tell you before you left for Guadalajara.
Bonnie made a phone call the night I arrived.
I wasn't supposed to hear it."
I turned to face her.
"She said…
'Don't worry.
Taylor won't be a problem much longer.
The papers are already signed.'"
The room went very still.
"What papers, Mom?"
She shook her head slowly.
"I don't know.
But she was smiling when she said it."
