Chapter 2: The Tea She Never Drank

PART 2
Maya didn't move.
She kept her eyes closed and her breathing slow and steady.
She heard Evelyn's footsteps stop just outside the bedroom door.
"She drank the tea," Evelyn said quietly into the phone.
"She'll be out for hours."
Maya's chest tightened.
She hadn't touched a single drop.
Twenty minutes later, she heard a car pull into the driveway.
Then voices in the hallway — Mark's voice, and another she didn't recognize.
"She can't wake up before tomorrow," the stranger said.
"The paperwork goes through at nine."
"She won't," Evelyn replied.
"I made it strong enough."
Maya pressed her hand flat against the mattress to stop herself from shaking.
She scanned the room.
One window.
Ground floor at the back of the house.
Unlocked.
She had maybe five minutes.
She moved silently to the window and eased it open inch by inch.
Then she heard Mark's footsteps stop directly outside the bedroom door.
"Mom," he said slowly.
"Did she say anything about the documents?"
A long pause.
"She mentioned a lawyer," Evelyn said.
"Someone she trusted.
Someone outside the family."
The door handle turned.

What Maya had told that lawyer — and what was already waiting for Mark — is revealed in the full story.
