Chapter 2: What Was Waiting in the Bottom Drawer

Part 2 ⬇️
I set Mei down at the top of the stairs and told her to wait.
My mother was already inside by the time I reached Serena's room.
She was standing near the dresser, not touching anything, just looking.
"I wasn't snooping," she said.
"The door was open when I came in from the garden last week.
I saw it by accident.
I didn't know what to do with it."
She pointed to the bottom drawer.
Inside was a folder.
Legal paper.
I recognized the letterhead — it was my own company's law firm.
I opened it.
It was a petition for guardianship transfer.
Mei's name was on it.
So was Victor's.
Serena had been working with Victor to have Mei's legal guardianship moved — away from me — in the event of a divorce.
The filing date was four months ago.
My hands were steady.
I don't know how.
"There's more," my mother said quietly.
She reached past me and turned the folder over.
Behind the legal papers was a photograph.
Serena and Victor.
Not at a family dinner.
Not at a casual gathering.
I recognized the hotel.
I had stayed there myself — in Singapore — two weeks before.
I heard Serena's heels on the stairs.
"Marcus." Her voice was controlled again.
Calm.
"Whatever your mother told you, let me explain—"
I turned around and held up the photograph.
She stopped.
And for the first time in five years, Serena had nothing to say.

What Marcus found next made his lawyer go silent.
