Chapter 2: What Lauren Was Holding

Part 2 ⬇️
Lauren was sitting on the floor of Bennett's room.
Her back was against the bed.
Her eyes were red.
In her hands was a photograph — one I had never seen before.
She looked up at me and the color drained from her face.
"You weren't supposed to be home yet."
"Lauren." My voice came out barely above a whisper.
"What is going on?"
She glanced at Bennett, then back at me.
She pressed her lips together like she was deciding something.
"Sit down," she finally said.
"Please.
Just...
sit down first."
"I don't want to sit down.
I want to know why my son was guarding his own bedroom door."
Bennett tugged at my sleeve.
"Mom, she was crying.
She didn't want you to see her crying."
I looked at the photograph still clutched in Lauren's hands.
She tried to pull it away, but I was faster.
My hands went cold the moment I saw it.
It was a photo of my husband.
Standing outside a house I didn't recognize.
With a woman I had never seen.
And a little girl — maybe four or five years old — holding his hand.
"Lauren." My voice cracked.
"How long have you known?"
She closed her eyes.
"Please don't ask me that."
