Chapter 2: The Name That Should Not Exist

Part 2

Maya arrived within the hour.

She didn't knock — she walked in like she owned the room, set her briefcase on the kitchen table, and started photographing everything before she even took off her coat.

Arthur told us everything.

For three weeks, Julian had been giving him small doses of something in his evening tea.

Just enough to keep him disoriented.

Just enough so that when Arthur tried to call his own lawyer, he couldn't remember the number.

"He told me I was confused," Arthur said.

"That I'd already signed everything.

That it was my idea."

My hands were shaking.

Then Maya held up one of the bank documents.

"Elena.

Look at the date on this transfer authorization."

I looked.

It was signed the day I flew to Chicago.

The timestamp showed 11:40 a.m.

My flight had landed at 11:15 a.m.

I was still in the airport.

I hadn't even collected my luggage.

Someone had forged my signature while I was thirty thousand feet in the air.

Maya's voice dropped.

"There's something else.

The holding firm that received the transfer — it's not in Julian's name."

She turned the page toward me.

I didn't recognize the name on the document.

But Arthur did.

His face went white.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

"She's been d*ad for eleven years."
