Chapter 2: What the Walls Already Knew

Part 2 ⬇️

Diana didn't answer.

She just stared at the key like it was something that was never supposed to exist anymore.

I stepped inside, keeping Maya close behind me.

"William, that key is nothing," Diana said.

Her voice was steady, but her hands weren't.

"Maya was playing in the basement again after I told her not to.

That's the whole story."

"Then why are you shaking?"

She looked away.

I carried Maya's suitcase back inside and set it down.

Then I walked toward the basement door.

Diana moved fast — faster than I expected.

"Don't."

One word.

Quiet.

Almost a whisper.

I stopped.

"Diana.

What is in the basement?"

She pressed her lips together.

Then she said something that turned my bl00d cold.

"It's not what's in the basement, William.

It's what's in the room behind it."

I hadn't known there was a room behind it.

Maya tugged my sleeve.

"Daddy," she said softly.

"I heard someone crying down there.

Two nights ago.

I thought it was a dream."

Diana closed her eyes.

And that's when my phone rang.

It was my mother.

"William," she said before I could speak.

"I need to tell you something about Diana.

Something I should have told you before the wedding."
