Chapter 2: He Knows. Get Rid of It Tonight.

I sent the kids to their room and locked the door.
Then I turned around.
Vanessa was still holding her phone, thumb moving fast across the screen.
"Who are you texting?"
"No one."
I crossed the room and took the phone from her hand.
She didn't fight me.
She just watched.
The last message on the screen read: *He knows.
Get rid of it tonight.*
I looked up at her.
"Get rid of what?"
She said nothing.
I went to my office.
I pulled back the floor panel I hadn't touched in three years — the one I thought only I knew about.
The envelope was still there.
But something else was there too.
A second envelope.
One I had never seen before.
Inside was a single photograph.
My late wife.
Standing outside a building I recognized.
A lawyer's office.
Dated four days before her accident.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
I walked back to the living room.
Vanessa was gone.
Her coat, her keys, her bag — all gone.
And from my daughter's room, I heard a small voice through the door.
"Daddy…
she said if you found it, we'd have to go away too."
