Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

The building manager opened his folder right there in the hallway.

I watched his eyes move across the page.

Then he looked up at me.

Then at Lorraine.

Then back at me.

"Ms.

Bennett…

there was a title transfer filed three weeks ago."

The floor felt like it dropped out from under me.

"A transfer to whom?" I asked.

He hesitated.

"To a Mrs.

Lorraine Marsh."

Lorraine's smile came back slowly.

Like she had been waiting for that exact moment.

"I told you," she said.

"My son took care of everything."

I couldn't speak.

Six weeks.

I had been gone six weeks for work.

And in that time, Daniel had transferred the deed to my apartment — the apartment I had owned before we were even married — to his mother.

"That's not legal," I said.

"My name was on that title.

Only my name."

The manager shifted uncomfortably.

"There are two signatures on the transfer document, Ms.

Bennett."

"Whose?"

He turned the folder toward me.

One signature was Daniel's.

The other was mine.

Except I had never signed anything.

Lorraine picked up my grandmother's mug again and took a slow sip, watching me over the rim.

"You should start packing," she said quietly.

"I want the bedroom cleared by Friday."

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from Daniel.

*Mom says it went smoothly.

We need to talk when you're ready.*
