Chapter 2: The Silence That Said Everything

Ethan walked toward us slowly, like a man moving through water.
The guests parted without a word.
Mason reached up and took my hand.
I felt his small fingers tighten around mine.
Ethan stopped three feet away.
He looked at Mason.
Then at Logan.
Then at the little boy who shared his name.
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"Vivienne." His voice was barely above a whisper.
"What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything, Ethan," I said quietly.
"I just raised them."
Behind him, Charlotte Bennett stood frozen at the altar, her bouquet hanging loose at her side.
Her father, the senator, had stepped forward with his hand on her shoulder, his face unreadable.
Then Eleanor's voice cut down from the balcony like a blade.
"Get them out of here.
Right now."
Every head turned upward.
She was gripping the railing, her knuckles white, her composure finally cracking at the edges.
"This is a private event.
She was not invited."
Little Logan looked up at me and tugged my sleeve.
"Mama, why is that lady so angry?"
The question floated across the silent garden.
I watched three senators, two CEOs, and a federal judge turn slowly toward Eleanor Montgomery.
Ethan still hadn't moved.
Then Charlotte spoke for the first time.
"Ethan." Her voice was ice.
"Is there something you forgot to tell me?"
He didn't answer.
And that silence told everyone everything.
