The doorbell rang at 9:47 p.m.
I didn't answer it.
Daniel rang it eleven more times.
Then he knocked.
Then he called my name through the door like I was the one who had done something wrong.
Finally, I opened it.
He looked like a man who had just realized the ground beneath him wasn't solid.
"Claire, you need to calm down."
"I am calm."
"You froze our accounts.
Do you understand what that looks like?"
"It looks like a woman protecting herself."
He stepped forward.
"This is not what you think."
"You announced your engagement at a company party, Daniel.
In front of two hundred people.
On Valentine's Day." I paused.
"What part am I misunderstanding?"
He had no answer for that.
Then his phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen and something shifted in his face — not guilt.
Panic.
"I have to take this."
"Go ahead."
He turned away and lowered his voice, but I heard three words clearly.
*"She knows everything."*
He wasn't talking about the engagement.
He was talking about something else entirely.
When he turned back around, his expression had changed completely.
"Claire," he said slowly.
"Before you do anything with those shares — there's something you don't know about your father."
