Chapter 2: The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to See

The neighbors crowded the doorway.

Kayla was already at the end of the front path, clutching the bag to her chest, her face white as paper.

One of the neighbors, Mrs.

Holt from next door, looked at me and said, "Is everything all right, Ruth?"

I didn't answer.

I was still staring at Kayla.

Jennifer stepped forward and called out calmly, "Mom.

Don't you want to stay and explain yourself?"

Kayla spun around.

Her voice came out shaking.

"What is wrong with you two?

Do you have any idea who I am now?

My husband will hear about this.

He has lawyers."

Lizzie didn't flinch.

She said, "Good.

Let him bring them."

Kayla looked at me then.

Really looked at me.

And something shifted in her face — not guilt, not quite.

More like she had just realized something had gone very wrong with her plan.

She pointed at the bag and said, "This is a threat.

This is harassment."

Jennifer said quietly, "It's a memory.

We thought you deserved to keep it."

I still didn't know exactly what was in that bag.

But the way Kayla's hands were shaking told me the girls had known something about their mother that I had never been told.

And then Lizzie looked at me and said, "Grandma, there's something we need to show you.

We've been waiting for the right moment."

She was holding an envelope I had never seen before.
