Chapter 2: The Photograph She Kept Hidden

Sophie held out the photograph.

It was old.

Worn at the edges.

And the two people in it were young — laughing, standing in front of a lake I recognized immediately.

Me.

And Rebecca.

The summer before graduation.

"Daniel," Sophie whispered, "I think you're my dad."

The room went completely still.

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't move.

I just stared at that photograph while Sophie watched me with those careful, hopeful eyes — eyes I suddenly couldn't stop looking at differently.

Then footsteps on the stairs.

Rebecca appeared in the doorway.

One look at Sophie's face, then mine, and she went pale.

"Sophie…

what did you do?"

"I told him the truth, Mom." Sophie's voice was steady.

"Someone had to."

Rebecca's hand gripped the doorframe.

"Daniel, I can explain—"

"Twelve years." My voice came out quieter than I expected.

"She's been sick, Rebecca.

And you never once thought to call me?"

Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.

But she didn't deny it.

That silence told me everything.

Sophie reached over and took my hand.

"My real wish," she said softly, "is for you to stay.

Even after."

I looked at this child — this brave, beautiful child — and something inside me broke wide open.
