Chapter 2: Three Times Nobody Listened

I set the fork down and reached for his hand.
"Luke.
Whatever it is, just tell me."
He wiped his face with his sleeve.
Then he said it.
"The last family that sent me back — I didn't leave because I was difficult.
I left because I found out what the father was doing to their youngest son.
I told someone.
A teacher.
And they didn't believe me.
So the family said I was a liar and sent me back."
The room went completely still.
"Did anyone ever look into it?" I asked.
He shook his head slowly.
"The caseworker said I had a history of causing problems.
She said I had done it before — made accusations to get attention." He swallowed hard.
"But I never did, Mom.
I never made anything up."
My chest tightened.
"Luke — how many times did you report something and get sent back?"
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Three times."
I stood up from the table.
My hands were shaking.
Because I recognized the caseworker's name he mentioned.
She was still working at the same agency.
She had been the one who handed me Luke's file.
