Chapter 1: The Promise I Made at Fourteen

I adopted newborn triplets after my sister vanished with her boyfriend — 20 years later, she came to their wedding and did the last thing I ever expected.
Our parents left when I was fourteen and my sister, Vanessa, was ten.
She cried, begging, "Promise you won't leave me, too."
"I promise," I said.
When Vanessa became pregnant, I believed she would give her daughters everything we never had.
I had been there for Vanessa throughout her entire pregnancy.
But on the day she was due to give birth, she suddenly stopped answering my calls.
So did her boyfriend.
At 5:17 a.m., the hospital called.
"Your sister discharged herself six hours ago," the nurse said.
"She listed you as her emergency contact."
I raced to the hospital.
Three bassinets stood beneath the window.
Beside them lay Vanessa's note.
"Three babies will ruin my life.
Marcus and I are leaving.
Do whatever you want."
I sank to the floor.
Then one of the girls wrapped her whole hand around my finger.
That was my answer.
People said I couldn't raise three girls.
But I bent over backward to give them everything they needed.
I missed vacations.
Passed on weddings.
Never built another family of my own.
Not because anybody made me, but because those girls were already my family.
Somewhere along the way, I became their one and only dad.
Vanessa never sent a birthday card or asked how they were doing.
Years later, June fell for Ben.
Ava met his brother, Luke.
Claire fell for Sam.
My three girls had found three brothers and chosen to build their lives with them.
After that, how could I not believe in fate?
They chose one wedding day — the happiest day of my life.
I walked each of my girls down the aisle.
Only then did I notice the last person I had ever expected to see.
My sister, Vanessa, was seated among the guests, dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief.
For one foolish second, I told myself it couldn't be her.
But it was.
"What are you doing here?" I demanded as I stepped toward her.
I couldn't keep the anger from my voice.
She had abandoned those girls, then gone twenty years without a single phone call — not on their birthdays, not when they were sick, not even to ask if they were alive.
"Rick, you don't understand…" Vanessa began.
But I never got the chance to hear her out.
A microphone gave a sharp squeal.
My three girls had stepped onto the stage.
Within seconds, every face in the room turned toward them.
"We dedicate this toast to our father — the man who chose us and never let us feel unwanted." The guests applauded as I fought back tears.
"And to our mother," Ava added, "who left us twenty years ago…
and is here tonight."
The room fell silent.
Every face turned toward Vanessa.
"We found her three months ago," Claire said.
"What she told us changed our lives forever."
She pulled a yellowed hospital envelope from beneath her bouquet and unfolded the letter.
"Dear Rick, if you're holding this, everything you know was a lie…"
With the next few lines, my entire world began to crumble.
