Chapter 2: The Man at the Door

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
The note was three pages long.
Lily's handwriting — I'd know it anywhere.
But the words didn't sound like the Lily I knew.
She wrote that the girls' father wasn't just some man who had walked away.
He was powerful.
Wealthy.
And he had never known the girls existed.
She had hidden them from him on purpose.
"He cannot raise them," she wrote.
"You'll understand why when he arrives.
Do NOT let him take them without reading everything first."
I turned to the next page — and my breath caught.
There was a name.
A full name.
And beneath it, a photograph.
I recognized him immediately.
Before I could finish reading, the doorbell rang.
The girls were still laughing in the backyard.
They had no idea.
I folded the note, tucked it into my pocket, and walked slowly to the front door.
I opened it.
A man in an expensive suit stood on my porch.
He looked at me with calm, steady eyes — like someone who already knew exactly how this conversation was going to go.
"I believe you've been raising my daughters," he said quietly.
Behind me, I heard the oldest one's footsteps coming down the hall.
