Chapter 2: The Envelope

He didn't move for a long moment.
Then he pulled out a chair and sat down heavily, like something inside him had finally given way.
"So that's what it was," he said.
"All those years.
That's what I was to you."
She didn't deny it.
"I tried," she said.
"I want you to know that.
I tried every single day."
"I know you did." His voice was flat.
"That's the part that hurts most.
You tried.
And it still wasn't enough.
Because I was never just a child to you.
I was evidence."
She flinched.
He watched her flinch and felt nothing — which scared him more than the anger had.
"Does Sarah know?" he asked.
"Does she know why you've always protected her the way you have?
Because she's yours?
Because I'm not?"
His mother opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
And that silence told him everything her words hadn't.
He stood up slowly.
That was when he noticed it — a small envelope on the counter behind her.
His name written on the front.
Not in his mother's handwriting.
In his father's.
"How long has that been there?" he asked quietly.
She didn't answer.
Her eyes filled.
And he realized she had been waiting for this conversation too — not to explain herself, but because she had known this moment was coming for a very long time.
