Chapter 2: The Name in the Margin

Hannah went still.

"Rebecca?" she said softly.

"Nicholas.

It's Hannah.

Your nurse."

He blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then his eyes focused and something closed off behind them, like a door being quietly shut.

"Forget I said that."

She didn't push.

But she remembered.

The next morning, Claire found Hannah reviewing Nicholas's medication log at the kitchen table.

"That's not yours to look at."

"It's exactly mine to look at."

Claire's voice dropped low.

"You're a nurse.

Not family.

Not even close."

Hannah looked up.

"Someone changed his evening dosage three weeks ago.

There's no physician's note authorizing it."

The silence that followed was a fraction too long.

"I manage his care schedule," Claire said.

"I must have updated it."

"You're not a medical professional."

"I'm his fiancée."

"That doesn't give you prescribing authority."

Claire stepped closer.

"You have no idea what you're involved in.

Leave this house before you make a mistake you can't undo."

Hannah held her gaze.

"Is that a warning?"

Claire smiled.

It didn't reach her eyes.

"Call it friendly advice."

She walked out.

Hannah looked back down at the log.

Then she turned to the page from four weeks ago — the week before the first nurse had suddenly quit — and found a name written in the margin that made her breath stop.

It wasn't Claire's name.

It wasn't Walter's.

It was Rebecca.
