Mia's mother — Sandra — didn't move at first.
She just stared at the bag in David's hands, her face going pale.
Then she found her voice.
"You destroyed a three-thousand-dollar bag over a dress?" she snapped.
"That's insane, David.
That is absolutely insane."
David didn't raise his voice.
He set the bag down on the floor and looked at her.
"She saved six months for that dress, Sandra.
Six months.
Mia took scissors to it two hours before the ceremony."
"It was just a dress—"
"You keep saying that." He turned toward Aaliyah, who was standing in the doorway still holding the ruined fabric.
"Go get ready.
We'll figure something out."
Mia crossed her arms.
"There's nothing to figure out.
She's not even your real daughter."
The room went completely still.
Aaliyah's breath caught.
David turned around slowly.
"What did you just say?"
Mia didn't back down.
She lifted her chin and repeated it — but this time, something in her voice was different.
Almost like she'd been waiting to say it for a long time.
And that's when Aaliyah noticed it.
Sandra wasn't looking at Mia.
She was looking at David.
And her expression wasn't angry anymore.
It was afraid.
