Chapter 2: The Question That Changed Everything

Part 2 ⬇️
Caleb couldn't move.
He just stood there staring at Olivia—this woman who had cleaned his home for three years without a single complaint—now shivering on a park bench with three babies pressed against her chest.
"Olivia." His voice came out barely above a whisper.
"How long?"
She looked down.
"Please, Mr.
Hart.
I'm sorry.
I'll be there by seven tomorrow.
I promise."
"That's not what I asked."
She said nothing.
One of the babies stirred and began to cry softly.
Olivia rocked the child without thinking, her eyes still fixed on the ground.
It was George who stepped forward first.
Caleb's father—eighty-one years old, slow on his feet—knelt down beside the bench and placed his hand gently over Olivia's.
"Child," he said quietly.
"Where is their father?"
The question landed like a stone.
Olivia's jaw tightened.
For a moment she didn't answer.
Then she said, very carefully: "He doesn't know they exist."
Caleb felt something cold move through him.
He looked at the three infants.
Looked at Olivia's face.
And then his father turned to him with an expression he hadn't seen in years.
"Caleb," George said slowly.
"Look at the oldest one."
Caleb looked.
And his whole body went still.
