Chapter 2: The Man Who Pulled Over

A truck driver found me first.
He pulled over without asking questions, put his jacket over my shoulders, and called 911 before I could say a word.
I remember his voice — calm, steady, the kind of voice that had seen hard things and decided to be kind anyway.
The ambulance came in eleven minutes.
By then I had stopped shaking.
Not because I felt safe.
Because my body had simply run out of the energy it takes to be afraid.
At the hospital, the ER doctor cut away my bandages and went very quiet.
"How long has it been like this?" she asked.
"Ten days," I said.
She looked at the nurse beside her.
Just a look.
No words.
But I understood it.
It was bad.
They started IV antibiotics immediately.
The surgeon who had performed my original operation was called in.
He stood over me with an expression I had never seen on a doctor's face before — not clinical, not detached, but angry.
"Who was responsible for your follow-up care?" he asked.
"My husband."
Another silence.
Then my phone buzzed on the tray beside me.
Derek.
I stared at his name on the screen.
My thumb hovered.
Before I could decide, the surgeon's own phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway to answer it.
When he came back, something had changed in his face entirely.
He looked at me differently.
Not with pity.
With something closer to recognition.
"Your father is on his way," he said quietly.
"He called the hospital directly."
I hadn't told anyone which hospital I was in.
Which meant someone else had.
