Chapter 1: The Night She Stopped Waiting

He said her brother was the only successful child.
Then she reminded him who paid for his business.
It was a warm evening at my father's gathering, the long tables set with polished glasses and every relative dressed in their best.
I had arrived early.
I had written the check for the catering, the venue, the band, and the new office lease that my father kept telling everyone his own son was "building." I wore my red dress, hoping this might be the night he would finally say my name with pride.
Instead, I overheard him telling a circle of guests that my brother was the only success he had raised.
My hands were shaking when I stepped up to him, my eyes stinging.
"Dad, why did you tell everyone my brother was the only success?"
He turned toward me, calm, almost bored, his black suit perfectly pressed.
"I was just being honest."
Beside him, my brother stood with his arms crossed in his black shirt, and he didn't say a word.
I took a deep breath and wiped my eyes.
When I spoke again, my voice no longer trembled.
"But don't ask me to pay for your business anymore."
My father's face changed.
His mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Then I turned and walked toward the door, and I felt every guest follow me with their eyes.
---
Will her father finally realize what he's done — or will he come looking for her with more excuses?
