Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Envelope

PART 2 ⬇️
Margaret's hand was shaking.
"She said to tell you she finally chose peace."
Daniel grabbed his mother's wrist.
"Where did she go?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?"
Across the room, Vanessa was watching them.
She didn't look concerned.
She looked curious — the way someone looks when they've been waiting for something to happen.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
Amy's line rang four times, then went to voicemail.
He rang again.
Voicemail.
"Daniel." Margaret's voice dropped.
"There's something else."
She reached into her evening bag and pulled out a small white envelope.
Amy must have pressed it into her hand without him noticing — or Margaret had found it on the chair where Amy had been sitting.
Daniel tore it open.
Inside was a photograph.
A grainy black-and-white image.
A tiny shape.
A heartbeat measurement printed along the bottom.
His legs went still.
"She was going to tell you tonight," Margaret whispered.
"That's why she came."
Daniel looked up slowly.
Vanessa had crossed the room and was now standing just a few feet away, champagne in hand, smiling at him like nothing in the world had changed.
And something in Daniel's expression shifted in a way that frightened even his mother.
