Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Three days later, I went back while Brandon was at work.
I just wanted Hannah's textbooks and a few of her things.
The house was quiet.
Mrs.
Gertrude was in the kitchen.
She didn't even look up when I walked in.
I went straight to the storage room.
Hannah's boxes were still there, shoved against the damp wall.
I started loading the books into a bag.
That's when I noticed the folder on the kitchen counter.
I don't know why I picked it up.
Maybe something felt wrong.
Inside was a document.
A property transfer agreement.
For the land.
My parents' land.
And at the bottom — my signature.
My hands went cold.
I had never seen that document before in my life.
I looked closer.
The date was from two weeks ago.
The day I had been at a supplier meeting in Dayton.
The day I was gone from seven in the morning until past nine at night.
Someone had signed my name while I was out of the city.
I heard footsteps behind me.
Mrs.
Gertrude stood in the doorway, arms crossed, watching me hold the folder.
She didn't look surprised.
She didn't look guilty.
She just said, very quietly:
"You should put that down, Rebecca.
It's already done."
---
What did Brandon do with that land — and how long had they been planning this?
May you like
