Chapter 2: What Daniel Already Knew

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

Margaret stared at the documents like they might disappear if she looked long enough.

Then her face changed.

"Those are fake," she said.

"You forged them."

"Call your lawyer," I told her.

"Right now.

In front of everyone."

She didn't move.

Her son — my late husband's brother, Daniel — reached across the table and picked up the papers.

His hands were steady but his face went pale.

"Where did you get these?" he said quietly.

"From the attorney's office.

Three days after the funeral.

While all of you were deciding how to divide things without telling me."

Someone set down their fork.

Lily was still in my arms.

She had stopped crying.

She was watching Daniel's face the way children do when they sense something is very wrong.

"Richard left this house to her?" Margaret whispered.

Not to me.

To Daniel.

Daniel didn't answer.

And that silence told me everything I needed to know.

Because Margaret wasn't surprised that the house had been left to someone.

She was surprised it hadn't been hidden well enough.

"There's more," I said.

"And I think Daniel already knows what it is."

Daniel set the papers down slowly.

And then his phone rang.
