Chapter 2: The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to See

Evelyn's hands were shaking.
She grabbed the deed off the table and read it twice.
Then a third time.
"This is forged," she said.
"It has to be."
"It was filed six months ago," I told her.
"By my father's attorney.
Call him if you want."
Daniel hadn't moved from his chair.
He was still holding his wine glass.
But his face had changed.
He knew.
I looked at him.
"You knew about this, didn't you?"
He said nothing.
"Daniel."
He set the glass down slowly.
"It wasn't supposed to happen this way."
Noah was still on the floor.
I pulled him up and held him against me.
His whole body was trembling.
Evelyn pointed at my son.
"He is a child.
He cannot own anything.
We will contest this."
"Contest it with what?" I said.
"Your name isn't on a single page."
That was when Evelyn's daughter Margaret stood up from the far end of the table.
She had been quiet the entire night.
She reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope.
Her face was unreadable.
"Mom," she said quietly.
"Stop.
Before this gets worse."
Evelyn froze.
"Margaret.
Put that away."
"I can't."
The room went completely still.
Whatever was inside that envelope…
Evelyn was terrified of it.
